I didn’t know how popular Colourpop is until today… 1-day 20% off flash sale

Hey guys! In case you haven’t heard yet, Colourpop is having a 1-day flash sale where everything is 20% off and shipping is free for orders of $30+. And this is the image I’ve seen more than 10 times since I’ve been trying to place an order:

the site is down 😦

Yeah, apparently the site is down (was up and loading very slowly earlier for maybe 30 minutes). People are pissed – just check out their Instagram feed comments. To me it’s a little bit hilarious to see how people can get so emotional over this.

Yeah it’s frustrating but I was genuinely surprised by this whole incident as I never thought Colourpop is this popular! It reminds me of those Mansur Gavriel site launch events back in the day when people would wait for hours to grab one of its signature bucket bags before they were all sold out within a minute (I was one of these people πŸ™‹).  Mansur Gavriel usually had to apologize for its low stock after these launches. And Colourpop also has decided to extend the end date of its 1-day flash sale event to 9 pm PST 5/1.

If you are interested in making a purchase during this sale, you can still read reviews and swatches while the site is down and create your shopping list. That’s what I’m doing on a Saturday afternoon πŸ™‚ I find Temptalia’s reviews to be the most comprehensive as she has reviewed probably every single product this brand has. You can search for review of the product you are interested in here. Or you can also check out my review from a few months ago here. The blush I got has become a staple in my everyday makeup as it’s subtle but adds a pretty layer of glow to the cheeks. I think the eyeliner and satin lippie sticks are good but not irreplaceable. So I probably will not buy any satin lippie sticks or eyeliners this time.

My list:

  • Eyeshadow: Amaze, Shop, Girl Power (I don’t have any bright coral shades)
  • Lippies: hype girl, frick n frack (I changed my mind after watching more swatches and reviews)
  • Highlighter: Hippo
  • Cheek: Not sure yet
  • Brow pencil: I just wanted to try it out. No high expectations

Hope they can get the site up soon and I’d like to hear what you end up buying or plan to buy!

Beauty news and feed for WednesdayΒ

Hey guys! Hope everyone is already excited about the weekend – only 2 days away πŸ™‚

Today I wanted to share 3 short, good articles related to beauty:

  • Colourpop Matte x lipsticks will be released on the brand’s website starting tomorrow, 4/18 and you can get a sneak peak of the colors, reviews and swatches either on Youtube (Kathleenlights released hers yesterday on her channel) if you have 15 minutes or in this Allure post which takes 1 minute to read. The colors I am most interested in are Cami and Hollywood blvd. Do you plan to grab one and what’s your pick?
  • This is probably nothing new but still I like to read about these girls’ stories in combatting and fighting back the unrealistic requirement to stay extremely skinny in their modeling career at the expense of health and happiness. If you are a Chiara fan, just ignore this next sentence but I feel she has become more and more skinny to an extent that it is a bit scary. I’m in no position to judge her and she has probably worked extremely hard to achieve what she has now so I’m just sharing an opinion. Anyways, here is an honest and empowering article written by an ex-model who had to be treated for eating disorder.
  • Did you ever fall in love with a mini/sample mascara and then bought the full size version with full dedication, and then feel really disappointed and wondering why you were so delusional? Well I have and I’m not alone! Read this post here on the mascara hack that you might not know.

Four everyday lippie swatch & review – Buxom, Colourpop, Tarte & Revlon #makeupTuesday#

Hey guys! Hope everyone’s week has been going well so far!

Today I just received a Buxom matte lip pencil in the shade Amsterdam so I thought I can share with you a quick color swatch and review.

From left to right are:

  • Colourpop Satin lippie in the shade of Frida
  • Buxom Matte lip pencil in the shade of Amsterdam
  • Tarte Lipsurgence in the shade of  Adorned
  • Revlon color stay ultimate shade lipstick in Iconic

Except for the Tarte one, all three others are available to grab.

  • Ingredients:

The Tarte one is actually 80% – 90% similar in color as compared to the Colourpop one. I got it mainly for its relatively healthy ingredients. In case you haven’t heard, the poisonous ingredient lead is present in multiple lip products and there are only a few brands that are supposed to be 100% lead free which include Bite beauty, Tarte, Buxom, etc.

  • Color: the two from Buxom and Revlon are very neutral and can work for almost all makeup looks, which is exactly what I’m looking for πŸ™‚
  • Formula:  the Revlon lipstick is the most moisturizing one among all four but it is NOT long lasting. Among drugstore brands, I think Revlon makes the prettiest lip products. These new matte ones are also gaining momentum lately.

In terms of getting these off, none is difficult to remove. I’m using the blue plasma cleansing treatment from PericconeMD and all came off within one wipe. This is a good makeup remover but more on the pricier end as I always tend to get more than what I need to the pads from its not so user-friendly jar opening.

Hope this mini review is helpful. What lip colors or brands that you are obsessed with lately? Any neutral color lovers?

Are you overdue for a makeup purge? Simple tips on keeping a leaner beauty stash.

Hey guys! Hope everyone is enjoying their relaxing Sunday and the remainder of the always-so-short weekend πŸ™‚

Today I wanted to share a mini beauty purge I did this morning . It’s not a big purge as I’m trying to keep a lean beauty stash (we only have one face, two eyes and one lip, let’s be realistic πŸ™‚

Frankly speaking, sometimes it’s really hard to resist the temptation to buy new products especially when there is a big promotion, but I know clutter makes me anxious and upset. So I now adhere to these principle below to help tidy up my dresser:

  • If I buy a new item, I need to get rid of an older one that serves the similar purpose. If you already own something that’s really good, it becomes more difficult to replace it. So a lot of times, spending a bit more to get a better product saves money in the long term.
  • I only buy makeup organizers once a year and if I fill up the drawers/containers, I will need to get rid of things in there n order to fit in new ones. I’d like to keep a minimalist look for the top of my dresser and too many organizers just make it look messy. Paradox huh, these organizers are supposed to help you keep things tidy but it will not work if you simply have too big of a pile.
  • Schedule a purge once every 6 months so you can get rid of expired or broken products. Creamy makeup products (think of gel eyeliners, mascaras, creamy blush, etc.) expire sooner than powdery products but those powder no matter how good they are don’t last a lifetime!

Without further due, here are the items that I’m getting rid of:

The Lancome toner is not bad, but it is just not the best friend for combination to oily skin. I’ve replaced it with a Clarins toner below. The serum was almost used up in the picture above but I don’t think it’s my favorite. Clarins products usually have natural ingredients but not all of their products work for my skin either. I feel their products are better suited for dry/normal skin types.

The 3-layer Givenchy makeup compact costs over $80 but it’s a regret buy for me. The case is sturdy and beautiful but it’s also bulky and heavy. I don’t like the eyeshadows as they are all shimmery eyeshadows with severe falloff issues. The lipgloss, mascara and eyeliners are okay. The only items I like are the face powder and the blush. The powder is effective in controlling shine on oily skin and the blush color is pretty, subtle and durable (does not wear off for at least 6-8 hours). The brush that comes with the compact is not functional, and appears cheap for a high-end product. Overall, I don’t recommend this compact despite its beautiful packaging. I might repurchase just a face powder & cheek palette from Givenchy in the future.

The eyeshadow I’m getting rid of is from Sleek (a UK brand and I bought in on Amazon) and it’s my second palette. Almost all the shades are beautiful, highly pigmented and and do not have serious falloff issue as long as you apply eye primers beforehand. I use the Urban Decay eye primer and a little goes a long way in the tube. The only complaint I have is that the packaging, as sleek as it looks like, is not sturdy and I’ve broken both 2 palettes. I’m going to try a new eyeshadow palette from Tarte next as Tarte has a more natural formula and people seem to love Tarte palettes.

Lastly, I’m also getting rid of a heated eyelash curler I don’t even remember when I bought it. I haven’t been using it in the past year as I’ve found my favorite two below: one is from Kevyn Aucoin and the other is from Shu Uemura. Both are amazing!! They curl my otherwise completely flat eyelashes to a crazy angle (good crazy) and the results last for at least 10 hours.

Sunday Riley brightening enzyme cream review – perfect match for combination skin

Hey guys! Hope everyone is enjoying the lovely weekend!

So I recently bought a Sunday Riley power duo set during the Sephora semi-annual sale event but today I wanted to share a review of the Tidal brightening enzyme water cream that got me interested in the Sunday Riley brand.

What is it and why is this a miraculous cream?

It is a water based ultra-light hydrating cream that will brighten your skin. Now the beauty world does not govern the use of words “ultralight” or “nongreasy“. There are so many moisturizers that claim to be “nongreasy, nonoily” and end up being a clump of oil that clogs your pores and make your face shine like coconut oil in a bad way (you know what I’m talking about combination skin comrades πŸ™‹).

So I am happy to report that this is indeed a 100% non-greasy cream that provides a tremendous amount of hydration. I don’t know how they did it but yep they nailed it in terms of how it makes your face feels afterwards, not only instantly but also the next morning when you wake up – softer, more plumped up and ready to shine πŸ˜‡

Bonus point

As someone with combination skin type with adult acne concerns, not all hydrating cream work on my face. The Belif hydration bomb and aqua bomb both that I tried out both caused breakout on me, which is so annoying!

I’ve been waiting to share this post until now as I wanted to make sure it doesn’t irritate my skin after consistent application for at least two weeks and it has not caused any issues so far!😌 It might be related to the fact that Sunday Riley skincare products are more on the natural side in terms of ingredients and formula.

In a word, this is a smart and fabulous cream that’s suitable all year long especially for combination skin.

If you haven’t yet, make sure to check out in person how this cream feels like! It’s available at Sephora or SpaceNK stores.

Have you tried any other Sunday Riley products? Which one is on your wishlist?

Why all the buzz around the $10 NYX micro brow pencil?

Hey guys! If you follow the beauty community on YouTube like I do, you might have heard of the NYX micro brow pencil a lot in the past few months!

I am usually prone to hype around brow pencils as I find most pencils I’ve tried are similar. But I broke a pencil I was using the other day and I thought I will give the NYX pencil a try.

It’s available at most drugstores and it costs only $10 (it’s on sale now at Ulta if you get two). I got mine in the MBP05 ash brown color. This is how the pencil looks like.

It’s a double-ended pencil with a swirl brush and a super thin twist up pencil end. I tried it out and this pencil is fool proof for anyone who might be struggling with their brow definition.

 Why?

– It can create any brow shape you are looking for especially a well-defined brow as it has a “micro”pencil end that’s the thinnest you can think of.

-It glides on very easily due to its waxy texture.

– It might not feel very pigmented with one stroke but it’s completely buildable and ends up being nicely pigmented after a few strokes.

A few minor things that are less than ideal:

– I like the dual-end design but I don’t think I will use the brush as much as it’s a bit too stiff for me.

-As you do need to apply a few strokes to get the color payoff, and it’s a very thin pencil, it will be used up pretty quickly
But it doesn’t cost much so I guess it just gives us a good excuse to try out other products after going through this one πŸ™‚

Overall, I think it’s a very good pencil especially given its price. If you are in the market for a new brow pencil, I recommend you give it a try. But it’s not as amazing as some of the raving reviews I read so if you are happy with what you have at hand, I don’t think you need to replace it with this one.

What’s your favorite brow product?

4 quick makeup tricks that you might not know

Hey guys! I am very busy with work this week but still wanted to share a quick post of a few simple makeup tricks I’ve gathered lately. Hope you might find these helpful too! If you know other tips, please share in comments and I’d love to learn πŸ™‚

  • Apply the highlighter after setting your makeup (either with a setting spray or powder) will make the highlighter color pop more!
  • Apply a nude eyeliner along your waterline opens up your eyes without the intensity from a shimmery one, therefore works better for an everyday look.
  • If your baked eyeshadow or blush gets a hardened surface after using a wet brush, you can try exfoliating the surface with Mascara spoolies.
  • If you have a dry shampoo you don’t like, instead of throwing it away, you can use it to clean your makeup brush. Simply spray it on the brush bristle and then wipe the brush on some tissue papers, and you have a clean brush!
